Logistics Data Sheets
When shipping cargo internationally, it is subject to both export and import duties & taxes of the countries involved. In order to facilitate the identification of those has been created the Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System, also known as the Harmonized System (HS) of tariff nomenclature. It is an internationally standardized system of names and numbers to classify traded products. It came into effect in 1988 and has since been developed and maintained by the World Customs Organization (WCO), an independent intergovernmental organization based in Brussels, Belgium, with over 200 member countries.
An HS code is a 6 digits number that identifies a product/ product group. It is important to note that sometimes, HS codes can also be 8 or even 10 digits numbers, as some countries may go more into details into the classification, as the European Union does. Clients often face classification issues when creating new products due to the possibility that an invention can belong to several categories or sub-categories at once. An HS code identifies not only a product, but also the duties and taxes each country charges to export or import them.
Later, it may be costly to correct an improperly classified product. Moreover, improper classification may also cause products to be delayed at international borders. If these products have any restrictions or government pre-emption rights, they may be seized at border crossings. A slight difference in classification can create a big difference in the taxes that are paid. We help clients address and prevent those challenges globally with:
